Good vs Great

Whilst skimming through Instagram the other day, I thought to myself how many good photographs were posted, just today…just the last hour…just the last minute? Then I thought, how many great photographs were posted…in the past year? But what constitutes a great photograph? Ansel Adams is famous for saying, “12 great pictures in one year is a good crop.” But quite honestly, I think it’s far less than that. A great photograph is War and Peace in one frame, a flawless application of technique whilst breaking every rule, an emotional marathon that leaves you emotionless, a train wreck that won’t let you blink, above religious political and philosophical debate, inspires like Monet, or Hendrix, and oh… don’t forget the amazing light. Well, I can tell you that with those requirements I have never taken a great photograph. I have, however, taken many good photographs. And usually each good photograph leads to a better version of a “good” photograph. So, maybe it’s not Good “versus” Great but rather a nonstop progression from Good “to” Great. I hope you enjoy my latest benchmark.
