I froze my ass off taking this picture. Martis Valley is thee coldest place in Tahoe but I always came back with the goods when I got out there. Except this time, well so I thought. You see I took this picture about 6 years ago and I had never really thought it was any good. So, it resided for years where most of my pictures are; in the black hole of the digital cloud. I think AI will take over by having us all committed as hoarders because given enough space humans will save anything. Travelling on down the endless vortex of some 30 years of photographs I came upon a folder labeled, “Cold Sunrise in Martis.” Now I thought it strange because I have endured many cold sunrises in and around Martis, so I clicked in it and up came this pink and blue toned pic of a frozen section of Martis Creek. Years ago, I think I looked at this picture and probably thought it didn’t have the technicolor of a proper sunrise but today there was something soothing about it.

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure or so they say. My wife was looking for a print for our fireplace mantle and to my surprise she remarked immediately, “That’s it. That’s the one! When did you take this picture?” It was June so I couldn’t quite pull off, “Last week dear…” So, I sheepishly said, “Oh a while ago.” To which she remarked, “Do you have anymore like it?” Hmmmm. I put on my space suit, poured a cup of coffee, and returned to the void looking for another Cold Sunrise in Martis.
