JOHN A. SIKITA

artist photographer philanthropist

Waking up to a thick fog on a trip to the Serengeti is not the best way to start your photography day.   Still the air was crisp, and there was a complete and utter silence, like that of snow falling in a forest.  Perfectly still, but on the Serengeti you could feel the tension in the animals as low visibility gave a distinct advantage to predator over prey.   I spotted what I thought was a Thompson's Gazelle frozen in alarm and snapped a few pics before it invariably took off at high speed.  I knew the pic in my mind when I saw it, but was wondering if it would transfer to film.  I wanted a black and white silhouette with the horns of the beast in sharp focus.  What I got was a pleasant surprise.  I was thinking of converting the image to black and white post process but found that the image, because if the fog, was already black and white with a beautiful silhouette of the Gazelle in sharp focus.  I believe you can feel the animals tension in the image just the same as you could feel it on the Serengeti that one foggy morning.
