I have never been to Italy without my camera bag. Unfortunately there is a first for everything and this time I found myself wandering through Italy without my trusty travel companion. Instead, I had picked up a couple of new travel companions, two short blondes, both with an impatience for remaining in any one spot long enough for me to take a proper picture and an affinity for staying on the tried and true tourist path. All things told I was ok with this, as I have photographed Italy to death and I must admit it was kinda nice sleeping in past the good light, and not slugging a 30 pound pack around constantly terrified of someone snatching its contents from me. I did however, still have my Iphone with me. And although I have grown to despise this slave master, I have seen some pretty impressive prints made entirely from Iphone shots. As I stood in the Piazza Del Duomo for the hundredth time, I started to look around for not necessarily a great photo, but rather what would make a great print. The doors in Italy are forms of art in and of themselves and the windows a not too distant second. So whilst in line to see David, walking from the Pantheon to Trevi to make our wish, and waiting for the blown glass tour to start in Venice, I became a window and door hunter with my Iphone. More than once I was asked what I saw in an old door or window across from some beautiful statue or church. It was as if to say, “Hey dipshit, the tourist attraction is this way.” But I was steadfast in my newly found passion for Italian made patina. In the end I had compiled quite a few pictures on the ol Iphone. I grouped them together as best I could into triptychs and one diptych (it just wouldn’t hang vertically) based on color, shape, texture, and form. I feel that I took this experience into the depths of Italian tourism and came out with some exceptional artistic prints. Even if they were taken while standing in line for Gelato.
