JOHN A. SIKITA

artist photographer philanthropist

The sign said, “Private Road. No Trespassing.” It seemed strange to me as I walked by completely ignoring it. Was trespassing really a problem along an old country road? I likened the sign to many that I had seen in the past, attributed to hillbillies believing that the land they owned belonged to them. Still, I moved with haste as I’ve also had summits with real hillbillies with real shotguns. It’s a common picture, but not commonly found. And in fact, I have driven past this scene every day for years and not noticed it until today. This allowed me to quickly set up and shoot (maybe that’s the wrong word here) the picture before anyone got wise to me stealing their view and giving it to you. I was packed up and on my way out as the sign hit me again and I thought to myself, I wonder if that would’ve stopped those evangelists from ringing my doorbell yesterday? Doubt it.
