JOHN A. SIKITA

artist photographer philanthropist

Variety is the spice of life, should be Morocco’s national proverb.  In one country you can go from urban European city to rural village, from modern amenity to ancient ways, from beach to mountain to desert, from Arabic to Spanish to French, from Christianity to Muslim, and some of the spiciest Tajine around (watch yourself on this last one).   I took a trip through all of it, and once I made it to the Sahara my guide was a Touareg.  Touaregs are an ancient nomadic people that inhabit a large stretch of North Africa.  I wanted to take a camel train out into the desert but he spoke virtually no English so I found a guy that spoke his Tamasheq but his native language was French.  My French consists of “merci beaucoup” but I can speak a good amount of Spanish so I found a guy that could speak Spanish and he translated to the French, who in turn translated to Tamasheq.   It was quite fun actually.   The next morning we went out early and despite going through all that trouble, my favorite pic was of my guide waiting for me with my camel.
