The Coyote in my opinion has been given a bad rap. Largely regarded as a nuisance today by modern society, the Coyote was revered by Native Americans in their folklore for being a cunning, highly intelligent animal who takes a high place among deities. I can tell you that if you spend time in the wild with these animals you will develop the same amount of respect for their cunning. There is a reason that despite man’s most persistent efforts, the coyote population still flourishes today. In fact, Fish and Game in their infinite wisdom, put a bounty on their heads at one point only to find out that the local population actually increased when they did this. Despite being genetically linked to the wolf, the Coyote is often a Lone Wolf, and usually doesn’t display the same social behavior as wolves. This photograph was taken along the Big Thompson river in Rocky Mountain National Park. I watched as this Coyote hunted ground squirrels with surprising success. Then I believe he heard my shutter click just as he looked straight at me. In seconds, he was off disappearing exactly the way the Native Americans described his supernatural powers. I got only one frame of him looking at me, and by skill…well some would call it luck, the depth of field for focus was perfect with the grove of Lupine next to him. To date, it’s my favorite Coyote pic.
